What Are the most Common Knee Injuries?
Did you know that the knee is one of the parts of the body that is injured the most? This is because it has a crucial role in the movement of the legs, and it absorbes a lot of the impact from running and jumping. It can also be put into a lot of danger by twisting and changing direction quickly, something that hapens a lot in high-insensity exercise and sports. Some of the most common knee injuries are:
Fractures – this is a very common injury, as any of the bones in or around the knee can be fractured as a result of high impact. The most commonly broken bone in the joint is the patella or kneecap. While the most common cause of a fracture is a fall, this can occur in other cases, such as in combat sports when the knee is hit, or in car accidents and such.

Dislocation – This occurs when some of the bones in the knee are pushed out of their proper place and alignment. Some dislocations can be quite mild, and they can be pushed back into place byu a doctor or an osteopath, while some can be very severe and require long treatments. Regardless, you really need to go to a doctor with every dislocation, as if they are not treated properly, they can cause massive damage over periods of time.
Meniscal tears – When people refer to torn cartilage in the knee, they are probably talking about a meniscal tear. Menisci are the rubbery wedges of cartilage between the thighbone and shinbone, and they lubricate and pad the knees so that the bones don’t grind off each other, and all the tendons and tissues there are protected. They can tear suddenly during very intense of violent movemnts, while they can also wear down simply with regular wear and tear from everyday life, and many elderly patients have problems with the meniscus sporting activities. They may also tear slowly due to aging.
Bursitis – The Bursitis are small fluid-filled sacs that cushion and lubricate the knee joints by allowing the tendons and ligaments to slide easily over the joint. They can become swollen and inflamed with overuse or repeated pressure from kneeling. This is known as bursitis. In most case, rest will usually help them to calm and down, and medical intervention is not always needed. However, in severe cases, the docotrs may have to drain fluid from them .
Tendonitis – Tendonitis or inflammation of the knee is called patellar tendinitis. This occurs when the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shinbone comes injured, either though high impact trauma or simply from over use. Although this is most common among athletes who jump a lot, such as high jumpers or basket ball players, anyone who is physically active is at risk from this condition, which is also called ‘jumpers knee’.
10. Posterior cruciate ligament injuries (PCL Tear) – The posterior cruciate ligament is at thee back of the knee, and it is connected to the thighbone to the shinbone. This ligament keeps the shinbone from moving too far backward. IT takes quite a lot of force to injure the PCL, and it usually only occurs when the knee or shin is hit with great force when the knee is bent. Therefore, it can happen in accidents and falls, but it can also happen in high contact sports such as wrestling and MMA, and also in football during tackles.
Can you walk on a torn ACL?
An ACL tear can be a really dangerous and serious injury. You’ll usually feel a ‘pop’ in your knee just as it happens, followed by severe pain, swelling, and a feeling that your knee is unstable and you should not put weight on it. Can you walk on a torn ACL? Well, for most people, the amount of pain they are in will be the first good answer. You’ll probably want to spend a few days in bed with your knee elevated and iced first. Then it is a question for your doctor and physiotherapist. For some, they will be able to walk, but will knee knee supports and immobilizers to make sure that they don’t do any more damage. Others may need crutches to help walk. The problem is that once the ACL is damaged, it can make your knee very unstable and unable to bear much weight, so you need to be very cautious and follow your doctors advice closely.
How long will a torn knee ligament need to heal?
If you’ve had such a knee injury, getting back to work and exercise is probably your main concern. So how long will it take a knee ligament tear to mend? That all depends on the severity of the injury.
Grade I sprains – 2 to 3 weeks – These are the mildest of injury, that usually come with moderate pain, but no loss of movement or motion and the knee can still bear the full wait of the patient. Although it may take up to 6 weeks for all the ligament fibers to be fully strengthened, the patient will feel better long before then. These usually don’t require medical attention, although anti-inflammatory medicine may help with swelling, and using the RICE method will be great. The main thing is to get rest and let the body to its healing work.
Grade II sprains – 6 to 12 weeks – These are moderate injuries which may have significant if not extreme pain, moderate to high swelling, and usually the patient will feel some loos of the range of their movement of the knee, and it may feel somewhat unstable. Usually, a good knee brace that can give some extra stability will be a good part of the treatment, which will also help with pain and edema with its compression. After a grade 2 injury, the patient usually feels back to normal in around six weeks, and physiotherapy may be required to speed up the healing and strengthening with massage, strengthening and joint exercises to guide the direction that the ligament fibers heal. This can also prevent re-injury.
Grade III injury – 3 to 6 moths – These are the severest type of knee injury. This involved severe damage to the ligament, possibly even a full tear, accompanied by high levels of pain and swelling, and usually the patient will have very limited movement in the knee and extreme difficultly in putting weight on it. This will require urgent medical attention, possibly even surgery. If you have this level of sprain or injury, you may need to walk on crutches for a time, and it may take anywhere between 3 and 6 moths before you are back to your normal activities. Physio therapy will almost certainly be needed to help rehabilitate your knee.
