For many of us, disability, illness, or simply old age means that we need a little bit of aid in situations where we find it hard to stand up for a long period of time, such as when we are in the shower. No one wants to really on others to help them at all times, especially in the shower as this can be a bit embarrassing, so it may be the ideal solution to get some shower bars fitted in your bathroom if you find yourself in this situation.
A good set of grab rails in the shower can help out in both getting into and out of the shower and also in giving people something to hold on to while they shower, so that they can be sure that they won’t fall down if they have problems standing up for a long time. They are also wonderful safety devices, giving something to grab on to if there is an accident or a slip. If you are not as stable as you once were on your feet or you have family members in your house that need the extra support, we’ve tried to save you time and effort by compiling a list of the best bathroom bars available right here, with many different sizes, styles and fittings in order to make options for every home.
Types of Shower Grab Bar
There are two main types of shower bars, each which have their own benefits and drawbacks.
Screw in grab rails – These are bars that must be screwed into the wall. The advantage is that these are, if installed correctly and securely, very firm and reliable. The setback is, then, that you need to drill holes in the wall and properly have them fitted, and if you’re not great at DIY, this may mean getting someone in to help you out. We recommend these for fragile patients and the elderly, who need the strongest support they can get.
Suction grab rails – This kind have suction cups to attach onto the wails, they are therefore not permanent, and can be put up and taken down when necessary. The major advantage here is that you don’t need any tools or DIY expertise to put them up, but the draw back is that, while still very safe, they are not going to be as 100% secure as a screw in fit. We recommend these for those coming off and injury or surgery or for those with visiting elderly relatives i.e. anyone who doesn’t need a permanent grab bar fitted into their bathroom. If you do buy one, please check before hand which surfaces it can attach to.
Bath Rails – These are bars that can be fitted onto the side of a bath, and they are mainly there to help you get into and out of the bath. Some of them are permanent fits, while many others have very tight and secure clamps that can be adjusted and taken off if you no longer need it. Also, they don’t require tools in order to install These are great if you shower is also inside your bath, but for those with just shower cabinets, they are not the most useful.

Considerations for buying a Shower Bar
Materials – First of all, as this is going to be going in the shower, you want to find something that is going to be water proof. While most grab bars advertised as ‘shower bars’ should have this covered, please not that there are a lot of different safety bars available out there, and not all are designed to be in the bathroom. It never hurts to double check, but it is going to be annoying if you buy and install something that is not waterproof without realizing it.
Size – There are all kinds of different shower rails available, from big to small, ones and that move and ones that don’t, so really need to take a good look at your shower and fgure out what is going to be the best for you and your family. Also, make sure you take accurate measurements in order to make sure that there will be space in your bathroom for whatever it is that you buy.
Screws – If you do end up going for something that is going to be screwed into the wall, make sure you do the installation correctly, and if you’re not an expert at this, don’t be too shy to get professional help. You’ll need to make sure that the wall wil be able to take the bar, and fittings such as rawl plugs may be needed. Also, it is going to be very important that the scres are covered from water, as moisture getting in there will cause mold and damage to the wall.
Electricity – you may think that this is a crazy point, as who in their right mind would take something electrical into the shower, but you should be aware that most health and safety organisations recommend that all metal rails in bathrooms must be earth bonded for protection against electrical incidents.
